Moments in Passage

I'm Osamu Toishi, a slow travel photographer based in Japan.

I have spent more than forty years traveling across Japan.

It all began during the summer of my first year of high school, when I made my first solo journey to Hokkaido. Since then, travel has become an essential part of my life.

By train, ferry, airplane, and car, I discovered that the time spent traveling toward a destination was often more meaningful than the destination itself.

During more than thirty years working for a global company, I also had the opportunity to travel extensively around the world, both for business and in my personal life.

Through those experiences, I came to realize something.

Japan is still filled with countless beautiful moments that the world has yet to discover.

Not famous landmarks. But a quiet rural station, an almost empty local train, a ferry leaving a misty harbor at dawn, an ordinary road bathed in the evening light.

Those quiet moments between destinations are the ones that have stayed with me the longest.
 

That is why I started TABINOSUKIMA (Moments in Passage).

My goal is to design journeys that allow people to experience these moments for themselves, and to help more travelers discover a quieter, more authentic side of Japan.

By capturing the irreplaceable moments born during those journeys, I hope to create memories that will remain in their hearts long after they return home.
 

Because long after we forget where we went, we remember how the journey felt.

私は40年以上、日本中を旅してきました。

高校1年の夏、初めてひとりで北海道を訪れた日から、旅は私の人生の一部になりました。
鉄道、フェリー、飛行機、そして車。目的地へ向かう時間そのものが、私にとって旅でした。

一方、30年以上グローバル企業で仕事をする中で、プライベートも含め多くの国々を訪ねてきました。
そこで改めて気付いたのは、日本には、まだ世界に十分伝わっていない魅力が数多くあるということです。

その魅力は、有名な観光地ではありません。
静かな無人駅。乗客のまばらな客車内。朝霧の港を発つフェリー。何気ない夕暮れの道端。
そういった「旅の隙間」こそ、私の心に深く残る時間でした。

そのような時間を味わうことの出来る旅をデザインし、日本の魅力をもっと多くの人に知ってもらう。
その旅での、かけがえのない瞬間を写真に収めることで、その人の心にいつまでも残る体験を届ける。

それが タビノスキマ (Moments in Passage) です。
